I Heart the Golden Girls - A Zine

When my friend and fellow Golden Girls nutcase, Erin of Haute Hardware, had her baby a few months ago, I knew I had to get her something special. Now, I birthed my son only a couple of years ago so I know the importance of honoring the mother during this special time. Babies get enough junk as it is, anyway. So naturally, I got Erin this:

It's the most awesomesauce Golden Girls thing out there, except for maybe this, which is the best thing I've ever seen in my life:

For my first Mother's Day back in 2009, Jason bought me this t-shirt:

So today, as I pulled in front of Erin's house to drop off bags of Ian's clothing and shoes he's grown out of + this I Heart the Golden Girls zine by jackiepeppermint, the tradition continues.

Long live Sophia Petrillo

Happy 20th Twin Peaks (love you after all these years)

Like the commentator on this Fresh Air broadcast and this article, my heart skips a beat every time I hear the opening theme song to Twin Peaks, scored by Angelo Badalamenti. In fact, all of the songs on the soundtrack send shivers down my spine, even still, 20 years later. I love you, Twin Peaks. Warm fuzzies always and forever. 1) Log ceramic sculpture by pfleghaar, 2) Sparrow fine art print by urbandesign, 3) Agent Dale Cooper doll by Purrr, 4) The owls are not what they seem. necklace by tefi, 5) Red curtains by DNDYDesign, 6) Dresser drawer knobs by LeilasLoft, 7) Organic fair trade coffee by downtownroasters, 8) Saturday Morning Stroll painting by StudiZen 9) Smell those trees cross stitch by thegreatnorthern, 10) Canyon Waterfall photograph by TheDapperLlama, 11) Vintage percolator by MostlyMadelines, 12) Cherry Pie ACEO by tamaragarvey

The Gentle Giant Falls

America has lost its mind. I speak of the highly important current event known as So You Think You Can Dance. Don't get me started on why the cute-but-miniature Evan is still in the running. But why oh why did Ade get voted off? It's complete insanity. He is one of the best dancers the show has ever had in its 5-year history. He's phenomenal, he's funny, and he wears a pick in his hair. He's sort of like a Nubian god. I mean, just look at him fly: One of my childhood fantasies (other than wanting to be Olivia Newton John) was to be a dancer...a Solid Gold dancer. I even put my fantasy to paper back in 4th grade (circa 1984): Needless to say, SYTYCD is the best contestant show ever, and now its best dancer is out of the race. Like I said, America has seriously lost its mind.

Raise a Glass of Leninade

For my first Mother's Day, Jason bought me a new closet (basically, my old one collapsed and imploded - loooong story) and this t-shirt here to the left. The Golden Girls kept my sanity intact during those early weeks of motherhood. Thank you Dorothy, Blanche, Rose, and especially Sophia! Now it's his turn. His first Father's Day is just around the corner and I couldn't help but give him his gifts early. I know, I know yeah whatever - he wanted them! So in addition to a new set of much-needed headphones and a Cat Steven's Best of CD (including the song "Father and Son"), I got Jason a little something snarky I knew he would love.

These upcycled bottles of Leninade soda by YAVA Glass were the perfect Father's Day gift. They also sell beer and vodka bottle glasses, too. I wish I could have one of each!

So here's to you, Pops. Let's raise a glass of Leninade to all the dads out there!

What Not to Wear

Okay well, I can tell you what to wear: my signature Juicy Fruit necklace. And now's your chance. If you're in the Dallas area, swing on by Best of Texas' What Not to Wear viewing party starring local maven Amanda Warr who recently got a fashion redux on the hit television show. The fun is happening at Jack's Backyard, a swell new dive in my neck of the woods: Oak Cliff.
I donated one of my signature Juicy Fruit necklaces to a charity raffle benefitting Attitudes & Attire, a very worthy cause that provides stylish clothing and job interview training for low-income women searching for viable employment. Other items for auction by my fellow Etsy Dallas-ites include a pair of earring by f. is for frank and a set of notecards by design roots. RSVP for the event HERE. Raffle begins at 6pm and the drawing is at 7:45pm. Good luck!

Swagland

It's a strange world when celebrities get all sorts of free goods, and us hoi polloi get to toil away and pay for the honor of them getting freebies. Funnily enough tho, I'm not even complaining! No, I'm actually pretty stoked. See, I've been selected to shuck up $100 bucks and 75 promo items to go into swag bags at the next MTV Gift Lounge. Now, I don't even know what the MTV Gift Lounge is yet - I will research, I promise! - but I do know that it's a place where 60 celebs, 10 press people, 3 charities, and 2 displays get these swag bags, which will include Tefi's needlefelted Shaken, Not Stirred olive hairsticks. Whoa nelly! the adorable Anne Heche wearing handmade swag at the 2006 MTV Style Lounge So thanks to Allison at The Sampler for selecting me, and pre-thanks to my mom and Jen who have enlisted themselves to help me package these little guys! Oh, and they're due in a couple weeks.... Do these celebs know what we crafters suffer? Why, hello there Detective Sandoval...

The Best Thing to Do in Dallas on a Wednesday Night

Thunder, faulty microphones, and ad-libbing. Greatness. Missed it? Ah, too bad. In the changer: a mix of Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet, naturally

Memory Lapse

I can't believe I didn't blog about this. Man.

About three weeks ago I finally made it through all five seasons of Six Feet Under. I delayed watching the last disk because I simply did not want it to end. It was like saying goodbye to an old friend. I finally did watch the last episode and made sure my surroundings were perfect. I was alone, in bed, lights down low, Oliver at my feet.

When the final scene came on, I was silent. Just silent. It didn't really sink in, but I knew it would eventually. The next day I watched the last scene again, and this time I sobbed silently, tears staining my bedsheets, strange looks from Oliver. If you haven't seen the series, do it now. Get yourself a Netflix membership and start from the beginning with season 1, episode 1.

To fill the void, I'm now working my way through The Tudors. It's good, really good, but it's just not the same.

Funny how imaginary people and places can really grab hold of you.

Mama's Gotta Watch Her Stories, Part II

So while I sit at my studio table making all sorts of fabulous new hair goodies, earrings, and bracelets (some of which I've posted here), I keep the telly on the shows I love to "listen" to.

I know, I know. It would be much more poetic if I listened to Mozart or Belle and Sebatian or Paul Anka while I created my work, but alas. I loves me some boob tube.

And this writers' strike is really getting to me. So much so that I've resorted to rewatching and/or catching up on TV shows of yore. Here are my top favorites:

Gilmore Girls - I will always and forever consider this my super duper favoritest show ever. The pop culture references and influences are enough to keep me steadfastly and forever in love with Lorelai and company. Favorite guest appearances: Norman Mailer, Sonic Youth, Christiane Amanpour.

Six Feet Under - I'm on season 3 now, with 5 episodes to go. Love it, love it. Ruth is my favorite character. She's so bizarre and hilarious. And the way she dresses. Whoa.

Freaks & Geeks - I'm making my way through a second viewing of the entire series (and season, since there was only one). I have three words for you: Carlos the Dwarf. Oh wait, two more words: James Franco.

Twin Peaks - There is a special place in my heart for this twisted little tale. I will always have a girl crush on Audrey Horne, and a real crush on Agent Dale Cooper. Mmmm, I could go for a cup of joe and a slice of Norma's cherry pie....

Mama's Gotta Watch Her Stories: A Ramble

So I'm thinking, Man it's the pits that I'm sick. I've got this flu-y viral thing that's taken down half of Dallas.

Then I got to thinking about the phrase "the pits" and I wonder where I first heard it. Then I realize I'd heard it first from my mom, who immigrated to this country over 30 years ago and learned English, no doubt, from a textbook last updated in 1943.

So then I started thinking about where that phrase originated and that made me think of peach pits and how I was always told never to suck the peach meat off of them because I might choke and die.

And that reminded me of The Peach Pit. You know, the diner where Brandon worked. You know - Beverly Hills 90210. And I started thinking about Dylan and how he was supposed to be "bad" and James Dean-ish and well, no one is James Dean-ish except for James Dean.

That got me to thinking about all of the stories I'm missing because of the writers' strike, and why didn't I follow my dream and become a famous writer, anyway? Well.

So there's Ugly Betty, Lost, House, Dirty Sexy Money, etc. etc. I miss you all! At least I've got my Golden Girls reruns on Lifetime, brand new American Gladiators (Nitro, I will always love you.) and semi-funny Colbert Reports to watch. But still, mama's missin' her stories. Achoo! Sniffle sniffle.

My So-Called Life

I don't believe it. You can now watch 2 episodes (including the Pilot) of My So-Called Life online. Too cool! That is, if you are old enough (or young enough) to remember the show. If not, check it out. Two words: Jordan. Catalano.

Six Feet Under

I'm illin', really illin'. Although I'm not running a fever, imagine everything else that can make you feel like doody and I've got it.

Staying home today. It's after 1pm and I just recently woke up. Managed to eat a bowl of cereal (hurts to swallow) and check the mail. In the pile of magazines and catalogues, I came across my new Netflix DVD. Yay! I'm catching up on Six Feet Under and now I've got 4 more episodes to watch while I lay in bed and moan and groan. (And no, the irony is not lost on me.)

Pushing Daisies

I stayed home sick today. Been sneezing and wheezing all day long. Too much TV. Funny thing is, after all the junk I watched today, the last thing I watched (technically I'm still watching it, and it's just that good that I couldn't wait to blog about it) is Pushing Daisies.

The show is a complete delight. It watches like a fairy tale - a sort of mix of Edward Scissorhands and Willie Wonka. The two main actors are just adorable and the dialogue is quick and witty like Gilmore Girls. (Dangit, I miss GG.) The main guy, Ned, is a piemaker who owns a shop called The Pie Hole. He has a strange gift where he can raise the dead with a touch, and return them to death with a second touch. His lady friend, Chuck, was murdered and so he brought her back to life only this time there was no second touch so now she's alive but they can't touch. One of her two crazy aunts is Ellen Greene as in "Suddenly Seymour" Audrey from Little Shop of Horrors. So Ned and Chuck spend the season trying to find out who murdered her and why. Too cute. Not at all morbid.

I don't normally promote watching TV - I mean, we all do plenty of it as it is - but here goes: watch Pushing Daisies on Tuesday nights at 7 (Gilmore Girls old spot!). And the recurring pie theme reminds me so much of an old whacky and unique favorite, Twin Peaks. But alas, there's no Agent Cooper here.

The Ballad of Bjorn Borg

I don't know why, but I think of of boyfriend, Jason, every time Bjorn Borg comes up. Maybe because he first pointed out who he was to me - the headband, blond hair, and all. Anywhoodle, I super love love love this band, Pernice Brothers, who have a song called the "Ballad of Bjorn Borg." Every song they do is fantastic, and yes they are better than Wilco. (Yeah, I said it.) I first heard them on the super awesome wonderful fantastic Gilmore Girls soundtrack, Our Little Corner of the World. It also features Yo La Tengo, The Ramones, Bjork, XTC, The Shins, and Black Box Recorder (a favorite of mine). Here, listen to this:

Reuniti so nice

My sweet little HP Pavillion laptop is working again!! After two weeks of being unplugged from my little guy we are back together again, thanks mostly in part to Matt (shout out! whoop whoop raise the roof!) After a two hour system recovery - during which I painted my toenails, watched Lil Bush, bathed Oliver (finally!), and did a load of laundry - my laptop was ready to go. So what's the first thing I did? Did I check my files to make sure they weren't corrupt? Did I get straight to work on all of the inventory sheets I've yet to fill out? Did I prepare my second shipment of jewelry for Shambhala Body Gallery? Oh, no. No, I did something much more important.

You see, Netflix sent me the third disc in the Freaks & Geeks series and, well, I just had to watch it. All three episodes in a row, in fact. It's probably the best TV show I've ever seen, after Gilmore Girls, naturally. Makes me long for those messy high school days when the worse things I had to worry about were which concert tee to wear - Depeche Mode or P.I.L.? - and what my locker combination was. Good times.

Goodbye Girls

I'm being totally ridiculous right now. I'm actually crying over a TV show.

I learned this afternoon (about 6 days after the fact) that my staple Tuesday night event is ending. And next week no less.

Yes folks, Gilmore Girls is about to become a thing of reruns. While I watched last night's episode that Jason had recorded (I was busy kung fuing), it hit me. I savored every bit of it, and didn't get emotional until the end when they showed a preview of next week's episode under the banner "Series Finale." I sort of got the weepy eyed thing going at first - you know, where the corners of your mouth turn downward and little tears begin to form. Then I got to thinking of seven years ago when the show started, when my addiction started. Cue the waterworks.

Seven years ago was when I took the leap into teaching. Then I met Jason. Then 9-11 happened. Then Jason and I moved in together and began a new phase in our lives. I suffered a miscarriage, semi-adopted Ketchup, then later adopted Oliver. My grandmother died, my stepmother died, my grandfather died. I spent four years teaching in the public school system and lived to tell. Each summer I watched episode after episode on my newly delivered GG complete season DVDs (thanks, Amazon). Jason and I went to Colombia and he met my family. I began a new career as a grant writer and later launched my own jewelry design company. I bought a house. I watched seven years of Gilmore Girls.

Those close to me know that on Tuesdays nights I am out of pocket. They know I don't answer phones, emails, doors, smoke signals, or SOS's. They know that if I do happen to pick up the phone during commercial breaks, I'll simply say, "Watching Gilmore Girls," and hang up. They know not to take it personally.

So ends an era. I've got all the DVD box sets on call, ready to feed my addiction - to give me the jolt I need when I feel an emptiness on Tuesday nights. It seems silly, but when a ritual ends, whatever it may be, it's a loss that is felt deeply and immediately. It's just really sad.

Aaaaaanyway......*sigh*

Ugly Betty necklace

This is a repost from the Crafty Chica. I love it so much I wanted to share it with you. Ugly Betty forever!

Supplies
Cardstock, pencil, scissors
Craft knife
Polymer clay
Industrial strength craft glue
Acrylic craft paint in gold and black
Eye pins
Assorted beads
Soft Flex wire
Crimp beads
2 jump rings
Necklace clasp
Needle nose pliers

Directions
Cut a strand of wire long enough so you can double it to be at your desired length. At one end, holding two strands of the wire, feed on a crimp bead. Loop the wire ends through the crimp bead to make a loop at the end so you can attach a jump ring later. Use the needle nose pliers to flatten the crimp bead.

Begin to add the beads on the double strand of wire. When finished, close off the other end by repeating the crimping process. Add a jump ring at each end, and the clasp.

To make the initial, cut a piece of cardstock measuring 1-1/2-inch square. Draw out the letter in the square and cut out. Take gumball-sized piece of the clay and flatten it (about the thickness of a pancake). Place the cardstock template on it and use the craft knife to cut out the shape of the letter. Use your fingers to smooth the edges. Snip the eye pins to about 1/4 of an inch and insert them at the bottom of the letter. Add an eye pin at the top of the letter. If you have a letter that is open at the top (like a K), glue one on each side, or glue a jump ring to the back of the necklace later.

Bake in oven according to package directions. Let cool. One at a time, remove the eye pins, add a drop of glue and insert back into each hole. Repeat for all the eye pins. Let dry.

Paint the letter gold, let dry and lightly rub on black paint around the edges. Use your finger to rub in more gold, so it has an antique finish. Use more eye pins to add dangling beads to the eye pins glued at the bottom of the letter. Add a jump ring to attach the letter to the strand of beads.
