Yes, You Can!

I'm often told that politics and business don't mix. But if Ebby Halliday can put Bush posters all over her properties and still pull in millions, maybe she's on to something...

That said, you are looking at (if you look to your immediate right on your computer screen) an official senatorial delegate for the Obama campaign. This is all a result of my attending the caucus on March 4th and nominating myself to represent my precinct. This means I will get a chance to vote again on March 29th and get even more delegates for my man. Yay! It was so much fun.

Regardless of what side you're on, there are some great choices this year, and Tefi would love to see lots of votes for your candidate, whomever he or she might be. So get out there already!

One If By Schmap, Two If By Sea

You are looking at a newly published photographer. Now, I barely know diddly-squat about photography, yet Schmap! chose one of my pics (Newman's Window, taken at the Old North Church) for their Boston guide. Click here to see my photo and others taken of churches around Boston.

So what's Newman's Window and why is it important? Here's an abdriged part of the story taken from www.oldnorth.com:

Paul Revere and the Sons of Liberty had prepared for this troop movement and set about to alert their countrymen that the British Regulars (Redcoats) were heading their way. Revere...knew...that lanterns shining from the steeple of the tallest building in Boston at the time would clearly be seen on the other side of the harbor. Robert Newman, the church sexton agreed to help, so about 10:00pm that evening, he...climbed the 14-story steeple in complete darkness.

When he reached the very top, he lit and briefly held up two lanterns in the steeple window (one if by land, two if by sea). Although Newman hung the lanterns for probably less than a minute, it was long enough to be seen not only by the patriots, but also by the British troops. As Newman was coming down the stairs, British soldiers were at the front doors, trying to break in to investigate.

To escape arrest, Newman came down the center aisle, and escaped through the window to the right of the altar. It is now called the "Newman" window in his memory. Above the window is the replica of Newman's lantern that was lit by President Gerald Ford on April 18, 1975, to begin our nation's Bicentennial Celebration.

When Jason and I visited Boston last May, I fell in love. It is my all-time favorite city and I felt such at home there, such an affinity for the place and the people. It is such an honor to be a descendant and fellow countryman to the revolutionaries who fought hard to attain independence from the Brittish. They are true heroes!

Want to appreciate where you come from? Visit Boston! Here, this should whet your appetite...

Pol Pot and Little Toes

I was snapping some pics on my deck yesterday just before dusk. Here's what the set-up looks like when I forget to zoom in:

Funnily enough, that one necklace, made of jasper and sterling silver, didn't take as all three shots were out of focus. I'll be reshooting it today when I get up the energy to battle the heat and mosquitos. The tomato head was a gift from Ellen and the planter is filled with lush green Wandering Jew. And my midgetine pinkie toes? Deformed from years of ballet and gymnastics, and no gold medal to show for it.

Speaking of my toes, yesterday on Radio Lab (a reairing) they were exploring time - the history and politics of time, the science of time, perspectives, etc. One segment talked about Pol Pot and the year 1975. Apparently he declared 1975 Year 1 since that's the year he began his reign of terror (aka the Khmer Rouge) in Cambodia. Basically, time started with him. I will admit that 1975 was a magical year, and I never thought I'd agree with Pol Pot on anything. So yes, I agree. 1975 is Year 1 and 2007 exists only as Year 32. And what do you know? I'm 32!

Okay, all egomania aside, if you don't know who Pol Pot is, or you aren't sure why I'm disgusted that I agreed with him on something, then you should watch The Killing Fields. It's incredible. Imagine Hotel Rwanda and Rescue Dawn. It stars Sam Waterston of TV's Law and Order (Dun! Dun!). If we know each other, ask me, and I'll let you borrow it.

Nappyheaded

In the wake of this Rutgers/Imus hullaballoo, I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. For those of you who haven't crawled out from under your rock lately (sometimes it's just better to stay buried!), I'm talking about shock jock Don "not funny anymore" Imus' comment about the Rutgers women's basketball team being a bunch of "nappyheaded hoes." I mean, to me the most offensive part is that it's simply not funny. If you're going to insult a group of people, at least be funny about it. So I did a Google images search to see what these nappyheads looked like. First off, let me say that I think the term "nappyhead" should be positive. There have been many mornings when I wake up and think, yeah, I really dig my nap. If I were a black woman, I'd have a big ol' fro, Foxy Brown style. The bigger, the better. But Imus meant it in a mean, schoolyard bully way, and that's just not cool. When I typed in "Rutgers basketball" into the images search, I found this:

How cool is that? Here's what the web site says about the women in this photo:

"Women's basketball became a popular sport for high school girls in the early twentieth century. These Ridgewood High School girls are dressed in the middie blouses, knee-length bloomers, and dark stockings that were considered appropriate athletic attire. Holding the basketball is Elizabeth Brackett, team captain, who became a doctor with a practice in Nutley."

We learn something new every day. Oh, and Imus should be fired.

Oh no he di'int.

Disturbing. (1 minute 47 seconds)

Disturbing-er. (24 seconds)

On a funnier note, AU students tried to make a citizens' arrest on Rove as he left a speaking engagement for the campus Republicans. Here's the video link: http://video.nbc4.com/player/?id=87914
