My New Marketing Job

Holy cow! It's been 5 weeks since I've touched my blog, thanks in part to my amazing new job in marketing and social media for Corner Bakery Cafe. I couldn't be happier here. I also could eat an Anaheim Panini every. single. day.

Not much has been going on in the world of tefi. I've made several beaded necklaces for myself, took part in the Etsy Dallas Supplies Me! sale, and have started working my tookus off planning this year's 4th Annual Jingle Bash. Other than that, it's my real job, my awesome kid, and just livin' life in general.

The good news for you guys? I'M HAVING A BIG SUMMER SALE!! Any purchase in my Etsy shop through the end of summer comes with a freebie - either a magnet set (of 2), a bookmark or a mirror. You choose! Visit my shop today and start getting free stuff: http://www.tefi.etsy.com.

I can haz fixed blog.

So this blogger business has been fixed! For those not pantydeep in the Regretsy forums, I posted a plea for help since blogger was acting the bish. Turns out it wasn't CSS or some other arcane code mumbo jumbo. You know what it was? A photo I uploaded in a post was too large.

WAHT.

Yea. I was actually drawn to tears because, in the course of trying to fix my sidebar yesterday, I totally messed up my blog. I thought it would never be the same again. So thank you Kim, RJG and angel drawers for your help!

Does Your Art Have Value?

Here's a great blog article from artbizblog I came across recently. It's awesome! Read the entire article here for the juicy details, but in short here are seven ways to give your art value:

1. Make great art.
2. Treat your art with care.
3. Don't ever belittle your art.
4. Speak the words, "I'm an artist" with confidence.
5. Keep a price list handy.
6. Maintain a list of collectors and collections
7. Mention your venues and galleries.

No go forth all ye artists and be awesome!

Wrapping It Up

One of my favorite blogs is calling it a day. Craving Anthropologie was started back in 2005 by a woman named Jade who loves the sophisticated urban-chic store almost as much as I do.

As most good things must come to an end, so too does her blog, which chronicles the latest offerings from Anthropologie and praises them to the sky. I'll miss you Craving Anthropologie. Perhaps I'll fill the gap with an Anthro-loving blog of my own...

Instant Karma

Things have been silent on the Tefi blog front as of late. Cannot believe how busy I've been with pregnancy, family crisis-y type stuff, Etsy Dallas Jingle Bash planning, and work - you'd think raising money for homeless kids would be easy, but in this economic climate? Eesh. Fuggedaboudit.

So my crafty endeavors have suffered a bit, become secondary. Short of a few chunky beaded necklaces for myself, I haven't done much at all lately! Shame too, since I have so many completed pieces yet to be photographed and shared with the world (and in my Etsy shop). But I continue to get a sale here and there, and it always makes me smile - instant karma! I feel lucky to be able to outfit and adorn women around the world with my jewelry.

That said, here are a few of my favorite pieces for sale at my Etsy shop. Purchase a Tefi original today!

Nesting Instincts

Many, many thanks go to mother, blogger, and jewelry lover Courtney of Nesting Insticts. She was kind enough to feature my Peapod necklace, which sold a record number of times yesterday and today.

I'm making a ton of Peapods (with 2 and 3 peas, both large and small beads) to have on hand at the upcoming Urban Street Bazaar next Saturday, May 10th. Come by my tent and get one!

So Darn Desirable

I was super-duper suprised and very, very pleased to see one of my fabric rings - Scotland Is for Me - featured in the blog desirable.co.uk. How awesome is that? And here's the ring that made the cut. It's named after a Belle+Sebastian slogan:

My Fat Season

Well folks, my Fat Season is over. I am finally back down to my normal body size, no thanks to the countless cookies, cakes, pies, chocolates, and junkjunkjunk I ate over the holiday season. There was not a munchie that I didn't love with all of my heart.

But for the past 2-3 weeks, I've been on a mission - not a diet, mind you. I don't believe in diets. While diets work, people on diets don't work. So instead of making myself eat crazy wierd stuff for a certain period of time, I told myself to cut out the following: cheese, sweets, cola, and fried crap. So that's what I did. Now, by "cutting out" I mean "staying away from" for most of the time. I definitely believe that if you don't allow yourself a splurge every now and then, you will fall off the wagon and hit your head on the way down. (This does not apply to actual addictions, so don't take my advice if you have a real problem.)

So Saturday I splurged on cheese and crackers. Oh, I love cheese, from the top of my head to all the way down to my toes. After two weeks of virtually no cheese, I declared it Cheese Time and plopped my pajama-clad self down on the bed and munched away. The Saturday before that I decided it was Junky Fast Food time, so I went to KFC and got a mashed potato bowl and loved every minute of it. Knowing that I'm eating well 6 out of 7 days a week allows me to feel zero guilt when I splurge a little.

Now I'm back down to size, and my pants are even a little looser than they were before my Fat Season began. I even told Jason yesterday that I would actually wear a bathing suit now! Whoop, whoop. I daresay, I've lost a little weight too (as opposed to fat), which I plan to pile back on in the form of muscle now that I'm almost over the flu and ready to go back to practicing kung-fu 2-3 times a week.

But I can't help thinking, when will Slim Fast get around to making a Grilled Cheese flavored shake? Mmm, cheese...

Mama's Gotta Watch Her Stories: A Ramble

So I'm thinking, Man it's the pits that I'm sick. I've got this flu-y viral thing that's taken down half of Dallas.

Then I got to thinking about the phrase "the pits" and I wonder where I first heard it. Then I realize I'd heard it first from my mom, who immigrated to this country over 30 years ago and learned English, no doubt, from a textbook last updated in 1943.

So then I started thinking about where that phrase originated and that made me think of peach pits and how I was always told never to suck the peach meat off of them because I might choke and die.

And that reminded me of The Peach Pit. You know, the diner where Brandon worked. You know - Beverly Hills 90210. And I started thinking about Dylan and how he was supposed to be "bad" and James Dean-ish and well, no one is James Dean-ish except for James Dean.

That got me to thinking about all of the stories I'm missing because of the writers' strike, and why didn't I follow my dream and become a famous writer, anyway? Well.

So there's Ugly Betty, Lost, House, Dirty Sexy Money, etc. etc. I miss you all! At least I've got my Golden Girls reruns on Lifetime, brand new American Gladiators (Nitro, I will always love you.) and semi-funny Colbert Reports to watch. But still, mama's missin' her stories. Achoo! Sniffle sniffle.

Shiny New Title, Same Old Tefi

You see, I can't get this song out of my head: "Expectations" by Belle & Sebastian. It's from their first (and best, I think) album Tigermilk, and I was pleasantly surprised today to hear it in my new favorite movie, Juno. ("Piazza, New York Catcher," a sweet folksy Gaelic-type ditty, is also on the soundtrack and also by B&S.)

So this takes me to my new blog title, making life-size models of the Velvet Underground in clay. It's a line from "Expectations" and it also stars my alltime favorite band, VU, who I keep just a notch above B&S in my list of tops. I thought it was time I had a full-on blog title rather than just some generic "Tefi Designs" wannabe title. So here it is. Hope you love it as much as I do. And go see Juno already! It's tops, foshizzle.

Read All About It

The New York Times Magazine published a great article about Etsy.com and the craft movement in general. You can read the article here. (But only after you've browsed the great handmade items in my Etsy shop...okay? Love you.)

Funny Ha-Ha

Came across a couple funny pics that made my Tuesday a little cheerier:

My cousin, Jennifer, and me on a catamaran in the San Francisco Bay, August 2007 (How is it that her hair looks so darn good?)

Funky Finds

Thanks to Jessica of Funky Finds for giving me a shout out in her blog yesterday. She came by my booth at the Deck the Halls show and couldn't have been nicer. Check out her site and keep up-to-date on some crafty happenings! Looking forward to seeing Jessica at our Etsy Dallas trunk show this Saturday (11am-3pm!).

Shoplifters of the World, Unite and Take Over

What a great song; I love The Smiths. As cute as the song "Shoplifters of the World, Unite and Take Over" is, actual shoplifters are not cool at all.

This past weekend was a blast for me. I took part in two supercool, hip and trendy art/craft shows and had so much fun! Shows give me a chance to meet people and really connect with my customers. I love the positive feedback, meeting fellow crafters, and I really love when customers who bought my stuff on Saturday, come to the other show I did on Sunday wearing my pieces. It's a total rush!

What is not a total rush is a dandy shoplifter who decided she'd take advantage of a little display I set up on the floor under my easel. She got away with a $22 necklace made with Czech glass and sterling chain. Grrr...I felt so violated! I followed her around and got one of the event coordinators to follow her as well. She got the hint and made a bee line for the back door. THEN, she had the cojones to come to the second show on Sunday (different event, different venue), and she came by my booth again! This time, I physically got between her and my displays and she got the hint. I didn't think a confrontation was worth it, so I didn't say anything. We all banded together and spread the word about her and kept an eye on her until she left. How sad is that? I talked myself down from my anger when I realized how lucky I am.

I don't have to steal things to feel better. I have a wonderful boyfriend who brings me apple sauce and granola bars when I'm hungry, who helps me with my displays when I'm too tired to stand, who helps me load the car and unload when we get home - and never complains, ever. I have a mother who is so dedicated that she stays with me at my booth for HOURS, then helps me tear down, pack up, and load my car. I have a best friend who comes to my shows and keeps me company, and makes me laugh, and passes out compliments effortlessly. Then, she helps me pack up and carry my stuff to my car. AND, she understands my compulsive organizational craziness, and accepts it with a smile.

So to that woman who stole from me (and most likely others): I'm sorry your life is not the bowl of cherries that it should be. I wish better things for you.

If you're feeling as thankful and zen-like as I am, perhaps you'll make a contribution to those less-fortunate. Here are a couple websites to get you started (the first is the charity I work for and the second is the charity Jason, my boyfriend, works for):

Charlie the Coyote

I have a new favorite blog. It has nothing to do with arts or crafts or do-it-yourself anything. It's about my first love - animals - and a favorite pastime of mine that I wish everyone did: rescuing hurt, homeless, or helpless animals. This blog is simply beautiful. Click here to go to the Daily Coyote. And if you fall as in love with Charlie and Eli as I did, you can buy the calendar here.

State That I Am In - Texas, That Is!

Wednesday, my girl Jen and I went to the State Fair of Texas. It's become a yearly ritual of ours, so we took some time off from work and headed south.

The weather was great, and we had fried anything on our minds. Among the winners this year of fried goodness were fried guacamole bites and fried banana pudding. We looked for both and had no luck. Rather, we noshed on potato swirls with cheez, an Austrian broccoli puff pastry, beer, nutty bars, and cotton candy. Considering how contientious we both are about health and staying fit, we allowed ourselves the luxury of letting go and eating JUNK. (Things are sweeter when you stay away from them and then give yourself a chance every now and then to indulge.) Other State Fair highlights:

* paying $1 + 3 canned goods to get in (thanks Jen!)

* the pig races starring Brittany Squeals and Rush Limphog

* the petting zoo (Altho we have strong reservations about animals in captivity, we agreed that public exposure is a priority in order to give people a chance to empathize, learn, and appreciate the animal kingdom.)

* the swings (wheeeeeeeee - ohmygodletmeoff!!)

* Big Tex with his ginormous chest and flat, flat butt

* riding the DART rail, then the DART bus (and getting help along the way)

* not having to see Billy Ray Cyrus

* giving the cutest little girl in the world my extra tickets

* post-State Fair drinks at The Meridian Room!

You've got 9 days left. Don't miss it!
